The tech industry has trained us to be skeptical, and for good reason. When a messaging app claims to be completely “free,” it usually means your friend lists, background habits, and personal data are being silently collected and sold to advertising networks behind closed doors.
UTurn completely rejects this cycle.
Our Commitment: We do not answer to venture capitalists or advertising networks. UTurn is entirely self-funded by its founders because we believe reliable, private communication should be a tool you can trust, not a business built on surveillance.
Why We Say No to Outside Corporate Funding
Many app business models are the direct enemy of digital privacy. When a company accepts millions of dollars from big-tech investors, a countdown clock starts. Eventually, those investors demand massive financial returns—which forces the app to harvest user data, track behavior, or use cheap tricks to keep you addicted to your screen.
UTurn is deliberately set up to avoid this trap:
- Bootstrapped & Founder-Funded: Development and hardware costs are financed directly by our founders. We answer to the people who use the software, not institutional shareholders.
- Lean Native Engineering: We own our physical servers and write native, lightweight code with minimal dependencies. Keeping overhead low means we can operate sustainably without burning investor cash.
- No Address Book Scraping: We do not ask for or upload your phone’s contact list. You connect with people directly and intentionally—we never map your personal relationships.
- Tools over Feeds: We don’t try to maximize your screen time or keep you trapped in algorithmic loops. UTurn is built to help you coordinate your day and then put your phone back in your pocket.
Sustainable by Design
We are in this for the long haul. To ensure UTurn remains fully reliable as our community grows, we will never cross the line into tracking you or showing advertisements.
Our operational strategy is simple: write fast, efficient software. By avoiding bloated web frameworks, heavy analytics suites, and third-party tracking scripts, we extract maximum performance from our own hardware. This keeps our running costs predictable, manageable, and completely within our control.
Your communication tools—including private text messaging, voice and video calls, and local neighborhood discovery—remain ad-free, private, and secure.
We pay our own bills so nobody else can buy your data.
